Clebrating the best of the independent film world, including more than a few of the movies that will be competing for the Oscars in 24 hours, the Film Independent Spirit Awards were held on the beach in Santa Monica on Saturday, hosted by Fred Armisen and Kristen Bell. Though the winners overlapped, as they have frequently in recent years, with the Academy Awards favorites, there was room for some upstarts as well, including best first screenplay winner Justin Simien (Dear White People) and best first feature and best screenplay winner Dan Gilroy (Nightcrawler).
